Context: MacBeth has just been successful at battle. On his way home, three witches appear who greet him as Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and the future King. Currently he is only Thane of Glamis. Banquo has also been fighting and wants to know his future. The witches say his sons will be kings, but nothing else. MacBeth and Banquo are not sure whether to believe the witches, but then Ross greets him and tells him he has just been offered the title of Thane of Cawdor. This makes him consider that the witches could be true and he could actually be king one day!
Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more:
By Sinel’s death I know I am Thane of Glamis,
But how of Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor lives
A prosperous gentleman; and to be king
Stands not within the prospect of belief,
No more than to be Cawdor. Say from whence
You owe this strange intelligence, or why
Upon this blasted heath you stop our way
With such prophetic greeting? Speak, I charge you.
